Brands Hatch to celebrate F1 DFV 50th anniversary this May

Tuesday, May 09 2017

The Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit will echo with the sound of Formula One's most famous engine - the Cosworth DFV - with a special 50th anniversary celebration at this month's Masters Historic Festival on 27-28 May. This will comprise appearances from significant DFV-powered F1 cars, whilst racing will be headlined by the FIA Masters Historic F1 Championship.

Many cars from the DFV era will appear in the Historic F1 races, including iconic machines from Tyrrell, Brabham, Williams, Lotus and McLaren, all of which will race resplendent in period liveries. Within the surrounds of the Grand Prix circuit which has changed little since these cars were races in period, you could be forgiven for thinking you'd taken a waltz back in time to the era of James Hunt, Niki Lauda, and Emerson Fittipaldi.

The Cosworth DFV 50th anniversary celebration will include appearances from a number of significant cars, including the 1967 Lotus 49 which was driven to victory by Jim Clark in that season's Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort - the first such success for a DFV-powered car.

Other cars appearing will include the Lotus 49B which Graham Hill raced to victory in the 1969 Monaco Grand Prix, and the innovative 'twin-chassis' Lotus 88 which was never raced. Whilst the 88 never actually competed in anger, it left an indelible mark on F1 as its rejection by the governing bodies arguably led to the sports subsequent pursuit of active suspension. Both of these cars will take to the track as part of a DFV demonstration.

This F1 bonanza will be supported by a high-class programme of historic motor racing at the Masters event, with additional action for sports cars, touring cars, and GTs from a bygone era. This will include the FIA Masters Historic Sports Cars which will recreate the atmosphere of the classic long distance races at Brands Hatch in the ''60s and '70s.

Tickets for the Masters Historic Festival at Brands Hatch on 27-18 May are available online from £16 with free entry for under-13s. For more information, please call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
